The 2022 celebration of Lights On Afterschool is this week on Thursday, October 20 and Governor Andy Beshear has made it official in Kentucky! As of last Thursday (one week out), we have received notice of a total of 133 registered events in Kentucky alone that will be taking place to celebrate the occasion. Registration is still open, and we’ve got a few easy ways to celebrate.
Let us know you are taking part in Lights On Afterschool by October 20 and you’ll be entered to win a free registration to the 2023 Beyond School Hours Conference in Orlando, Florida! Valued at $585, this gathering provides professional development opportunities for educators and leaders across the learning day.
If you’re in need of other last-minute ways to participate in Lights On Afterschool, look no further! Here are a few easy event ideas:
Learn more about Kentucky’s current afterschool landscape. Join us for a virtual briefing on the state of afterschool in Kentucky. We’ll provide key facts, sharable graphics, and success stories from the field. We’ll also have a very special welcome message from Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman. Register here.
Take youth on an adventure with the award-winning interactive video production “the Ocean’s Got Talent,” a musical ocean-themed talent show in which kids help Seymour the Sea Slug recognize this strengths and shine his light! Page Turner Adventures is giving all Lights On Afterschool participants FREE access to the video for Oct 20 only. Sign up here. Best for students K-2.
Share the joys of STEM learning. Join the Afterschool Alliance, NASA, and Million Girls Moonshot for a virtual Lights On Afterschool event, featuring a pre-recorded interaction at the International Space Station with astronaut Jessica Watkins and actress Keke Palmer!
Get active on social media. Tell the world why you’re keeping the Lights On Afterschool, or why you love your afterschool staff! We’ve provided the templates, all you’ll need to do is:
- Print the template, fill it out (or pass along to parents and students to do so!)
- Snap a photo of the finished product or a selfie of you and your message.
- Upload to your favorite social media sites with the hashtag #LightsOnAfterschool and tag @afterschool4all and @kyosa4kids. You can also use the hashtag to share an afterschool message of your own.
Lastly, follow the #LightsOnAfterschool hashtag to see how other afterschool programs are celebrating!
