SUMMARY:Getting Ready for Change in OST
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by: American Institutes for Research (AIR) \nResearch and practical experience suggest that readiness is critical when making a change. In out of school time (OST)\, change can take many forms—from making improvements to existing practices\, to implementing new activities\, to revamping a program completely—but its success hinges on having strong operations\, willing staff\, and engaged stakeholders ready to make change happen with integrity and quality. Join us to learn more about what readiness is and why it matters\, and hear from OST leaders who are integrating readiness thinking and tools into their work. Participants also will have the opportunity to hear from researchers at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) about AIR’s new\, free resource\, the Ready to Implement Toolkit. The Toolkit is a research-based resource for OST leaders\, staff\, and teams who want to make data-driven decisions as they prepare for change. \nAIR’s development of the Ready to Implement Toolkit was supported by the Susan Crown Exchange and The Wallace Foundation. The Toolkit was developed with input and support from the field to create something useful for the field. We are indebted to our expert OST leaders and staff\, and technical and field advisors for their guidance and support. \nFeatured Panelists: \n\nMary Arnold\, Director of Youth Development Research and Practice\, National 4-H Council\nJennette Claassen\, Director of Evaluation\, Playworks\nSeana Hasson\, Senior Director\, Research and Analytics Practices\, YMCA of the USA

SUMMARY:Transforming Science Learning: Part 2: Science Learning and Language Integration With Multilingual Learners: Asset-Oriented Framing
DESCRIPTION:This web seminar is Part 2 of a two-part series. The purpose of these two 90-minute sessions is to present contemporary approaches to developing NGSS-designed instructional materials that integrate science and language with multilingual learners. Participants will examine reframing of multilingual learners from a deficit-oriented view to an asset-oriented view across research\, policy\, and practice. Using a yearlong fifth-grade curriculum called Science And Integrated Language (SAIL)\, participants will examine how contemporary approaches to integrating science and language are mutually supportive with all students\, especially multilingual learners. \nIn Part 2 the presenters will focus on a series of webinars and briefs that were developed through collaboration between the SAIL research team and New York State Education Department. Then\, they will describe alignment between the NGSS (science standards) and WIDA 2020 Edition (English language development standards) with multilingual learners. Register to Part 1.
