SUMMARY:The Centrality of Relationships: Tutors\, Mentors\, Coaches and Parents
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Campaign for Grade Level Reading \nTutors\, mentors and coaches have long been critical components in a system of supportive relationships for young people. The pandemic intensified attention on the ways social connections can help advance whole child development and accelerate learning. Now is the time to investigate how these approaches can be aligned within communities to create better outcomes for young learners. There is also much to explore regarding how these dedicated guides and counselors can best devote their time and energy to children in the early years and early grades to promote the early relational health that is so crucial for development and can help confront inequities. \nAnd\, just as important\, how can tutors\, mentors and coaches help to strengthen the parent-teacher dyad that has always been critical for early school success and is even more significant now with so much confusion and concern surrounding learning conditions.

SUMMARY:Innovation in Out-of-School Digital STEM Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by: The Campaign for Gravel-Level Reading\nCo-sponsored by: Overdeck Family Foundation \nAfterschool STEM isn’t just fun; it plays a unique role in promoting academic outcomes\, supporting social-emotional development\, and leveraging the home and community environments as places for extended learning for students from all walks of life. When the pandemic shut down schools and after-school programs\, it created a real sense of urgency for accessible digital platforms that can support children’s learning. This was especially important for math: between 2019 and 2021\, students’ average math scores dropped by a range of 3.3 points to 4.5 points for sixth-graders and eighth-graders\, respectively\, fueling the need for academic support outside the school day.

SUMMARY:Using Federal Funds for Summer Learning and Afterschool: A New Guide for Providers\, School Districts\, and Intermediaries
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is intended for all OST stakeholders – program leaders\, school district leadership\, state officials\, and local government leaders. \nHigh-quality summer and afterschool learning programs (“out-of-school time” or OST programs) play an important role in the lives of our nation’s young people. In the wake of the pandemic\, educators are placing greater emphasis on them as a means for learning recovery and to promote well-being\, aided by new federal funding through the American Rescue Plan Act. \nAt the same time\, district leaders and out-of-school time providers have lacked a comprehensive guide about which of the several federal funding streams can be used to support summer and afterschool – not only to fund direct program costs\, but also for planning and the infrastructure needed to deliver high-quality programs over the longer term. \nTo meet this need\, The Wallace Foundation will hold a webinar to share a new\, free resource developed by EducationCounsel: Using Federal Funds for Summer Learning and Afterschool: A New Guide for Providers\, School Districts\, and Intermediaries. \nThe webinar will feature: \n\nShital Shah\, Senior Advisor for Strategic Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Education;\nSean Worley\, author of the new resource and Policy Advisor at EducationCounsel;\nBarbara Couto Sipe\, President and CEO of NextUp RVA;\nand perspectives from district and city leaders on funding summer learning and afterschool.

SUMMARY:Modeling Engineering Practices
DESCRIPTION:Engineering has become a staple of STEM programming for youth. How can we confidently bring engineering into our programming and support youth as they engage in problem solving? In this module\, participants gain first-hand experience with engineering by solving a design problem. They examine the components of the engineering design process and discuss ways to model the process with youth. Asking Purposeful Questions is a prerequisite to this skill. \nThe expectation is that you will be live at all three sessions and an active member of this coaching cohort. Stipends are offered to participants who complete feedback surveys before and after a module.

SUMMARY:Insights and Reflections on Planning and Implementing District-led Summer Programs
DESCRIPTION:Research tells us that school district-led summer learning programs can play a vital role in supporting students academically and providing them with enriching activities they may not otherwise experience. \nBut how do they do it? \nA forthcoming report draws from research conducted by Education Development Center\, Inc. (EDC) and commissioned by The Wallace Foundation. Supporting Quality in Summer Learning: How Districts Plan\, Develop\, and Implement Programs sheds light on the complex array of policies\, procedures\, and resources that go into the design and operation of these programs. The report explores topics such as program focus and goals\, community partnerships\, professional development\, family engagement\, and funding streams. \nDuring this webinar\, researchers will share selected findings from the study\, which draws on the perspectives of 92 professionals and policymakers—including representatives of districts\, community partners and state agencies involved in summer learning\, such as 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The study examined district strategies before\, during\, and emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic and offers perspective on how summer learning is evolving to meet shifting needs. \nRepresentatives from two communities involved in the study will then reflect on how these findings connect with how they are approaching summer programming.

SUMMARY:High-Dosage Tutoring: State Strategies for Advancing Equitable Learning Recovery
DESCRIPTION:High-dosage tutoring has emerged as both an effective intervention and a smart investment to support equitable learning recovery. Tutoring supplements quality instruction especially for children who have experienced significant learning loss as a result of the pandemic. Unfortunately\, the children most in need of this intervention — and those most likely to benefit — are often unlikely to have access to high-quality and high-dosage tutoring. Tutoring has the potential to make significant academic gains for children who have experienced significant lost learning time. States and school districts can play an essential role in ensuring equitable access to the evidence-based tutoring that can accelerate learning and address learning loss. A recent report by Casey Sullivan Taylor\, ExcelinEd’s Policy Director for Early Literacy\, explores tutoring initiatives in a number of states that are leveraging evidenced-based models for high-dosage tutoring.
