SUMMARY:Game Changers: Celebrating & Learning from Black Youth Leadership
DESCRIPTION:As we reflect on our country’s history and the progress Black people have led\, we see a strong legacy of youth leadership. Many of the major accomplishments in the fight for equality have been the result of youth activism\, youth-led policy change\, and the relentless action of new generations unsatisfied with the status quo. While the energy of youth leadership is valuable in its own right\, it can have even more impact when combined with support from adults who hold power. This Black History Month\, America’s Promise Alliance invites you to join a conversation with Black youth and adult leaders to explore how we can share power and work across generations to write the next chapter of progress for the United States.

SUMMARY:Entrepreneur Education: Harness students’ talents and passions
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking to harness the summer of 2021 to help students develop their talents and passions while becoming reengaged in their education? Entrepreneur education can help students strengthen their “entrepreneurial mindsets\,” identify skills and interests\, and explore ways in which students can apply their talents to solve problems in their lives and communities. Join this session to learn about entrepreneurial education as well as free k-12 resources and events that are flexible and can be facilitated in virtual or in-person environments\, and also support other program goals such as social-emotional learning\, career readiness\, STEM\, and service learning. \nEntrepreneurship is more than starting a business\, it’s a way of thinking and acting. It’s a mindset and set of skills. Mindsets such as creativity\, opportunity seeking\, adaptability\, persistence\, and optimism help students reframe problems as opportunities and feel empowered to exert agency in their own lives. These same entrepreneurial mindsets and skills are critical to student success\, both in and out of the classroom. They are also high-demand\, employability skills in today’s workforce. Through entrepreneurship programming\, engage your local civic\, business\, and elected leaders to participate as mentors\, guest speakers\, and pitch challenge judges and watch them become champions for your youth and your programs.

SUMMARY:Data Use in Out-of-School Time\, Part I: Bridging Practice and Research through Continuous Improvement
DESCRIPTION:Out-of-school time programs sometimes struggle to define and measure what afterschool does\, and why it matters for kids and families. Too often\, programs are asked to measure outcomes that are only tangentially related to what they do\, which can be frustrating for everyone. It doesn’t have to be this way! \nThe Afterschool Alliance is excited to host this webinar in partnership with Every Hour Counts\, a national coalition of expanded-learning intermediary organizations that increases access to quality learning opportunities. Every Hour Counts has developed a Measurement Framework to help intermediary organizations use data at the youth\, program\, and system level to guide continuous improvement. In this session\, we’ll share the essentials of the framework and hear how two out-of-school time intermediaries\, Boston After School & Beyond and the Providence After School Alliance\, put the framework into practice. Presenters will share useful tips for intermediaries and out-of-school time networks on how to apply the measurement framework to their own continuous improvement process. \nThis presentation is part of a two-part series featuring contributors to Measure\, Use\, Improve! Data Use in Out-of-School Time\, from Information Age Publishing. \nPresenters:\nJessica Donner\, Every Hour Counts\nAnamarie Auger Whitaker\, RAND Corporation and University of Delaware\nAnn Durham\, Providence After School Alliance\nLisa Gomi Hui\, Boston After School & Beyond\nCorey Newhouse\, Public Profit

SUMMARY:The Standards and STEM: Breakdown of the types of standards that STEM Curricula Can Meet
DESCRIPTION:Working towards effective STEM learning means gaining a deeper understanding of the future we aspire to build\, and having the ability to imagine this future. \nStandards’ bodies and organizations work hard to build standards that help us guide students into being inquisitive\, innovative\, and inventive. Those standards can be difficult to navigate if you’re new to teaching STEM and especially if you’re integrating emerging technologies into your instruction. \nWhat standards should you consider? What emerging technologies will engage students and provide effective instruction? Where is the overlap for me to get the most return on the investment? \nExplore the intersection of standards\, methodologies\, and curricula in this educational webinar made for teachers and administration brought to you by NextWave STEM. \nWebinar Objectives: \n\nGain a deeper understanding of STEM-related standards across a spectrum of discipline\nExplore ways in which curricula can satisfy standards while developing holistic learning in students

SUMMARY:America After 3PM: Demand Grows\, Opportunity Shrinks
DESCRIPTION:Join the Afterschool Alliance Tuesday\, December 8\, at 1 PM EST for a virtual media and field briefing on new nationwide data on demand for afterschool programs and parent views on afterschool opportunities. The report “America After 3PM: Demand Grows\, Opportunity Shrinks\,” includes responses from more than 30\,000 U.S. families and builds on household surveys conducted in 2004\, 2009 and 2014. It offers a pre-pandemic snapshot of how children and youth spend their afternoons and includes a separate survey of parents conducted this fall. \nFor years\, afterschool programs have kept kids safe\, inspired them to learn\, and offered parents peace of mind that their children are constructively engaged in the hours between the end of the school day and when parents return from work. \nCommissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and conducted by Edge Research\, the new study reveals disturbing trends in access to afterschool opportunities\, high unmet demand for afterschool overall\, and paints a stark picture of grave inequities in terms of which families can access and afford afterschool programs.
