SUMMARY:Re-Engaging Students During COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, the pandemic has significantly disrupted learning and family life. Challenges brought about by COVID-19—including increased mobility\, family economic hardship\, and drastic changes to learning environments—have caused more young people than usual to leave or disengage from school. As a result\, many educators and youth-supporting practitioners are thinking about attendance and engagement differently and are trying to shift and adapt their strategies based on what students need at this unique moment in time. One critical strategy right now is re-engagement: identifying young people who have left school or have not been engaged due to the pandemic and supporting them to re-enroll or re-engage in courses so that they can graduate with a high school diploma. \nJoin America’s Promise\, National League of Cities\, and Attendance Works on March 25 from 3:00-4:30 PM ET in a conversation with young people and community leaders from around the country to explore promising strategies for re-engaging students who have left school during COVID-19. \nIn this conversation\, panelists will discuss: \n\nthe scale of the issue\, including tracking\, measuring\, and understanding absenteeism and engagement data during this complex time;\nnew practices for what re-engagement has looked like in specific communities; and\nideas for prioritizing re-engagement in this and the next school year.\n\nPanelists include staff and youth representatives from: \n\nAttendance Works\nCity of Orlando – Parramore Kidz Zone and partner schools in Orlando\, FL\nColorado Youth for a Change and partner schools in Denver\, CO\nNational League of Cities – Institute for Youth\, Education\, and Families\n\n

SUMMARY:Data Use in Out-of-School Time\, Part III: Free and Low-Cost Resources for Evaluation and Continuous Quality Improvement in Afterschool
DESCRIPTION:Professionals and practitioners in afterschool and summer programs see evidence that their work benefits young people every day\, but may struggle to quantify and effectively tell the stories\, especially when working with a limited budget. \nFortunately\, there are many terrific free and low-cost resources that afterschool and summer programs can use to refine their vision for evaluation\, collect relevant\, meaningful information\, and put that information into action. In this session\, panelists will share their go-to resources for evaluation and continuous program improvement in afterschool and summer and offer insight about how to make the most of what’s available. \nThis session is intended as an intermediate-level overview of available resources for evaluation and learning. Program leaders and supervisors\, and those with a formal role for data collection and reporting\, are most likely to benefit from attending. \n  \nPresenters \n\nRegino Chavez\, Director of Evaluation\, LA’s BEST\nChristy Gallese\, Director\, Expanded Learning Opportunities\nJennifer Griffin-Wiesner\, Strategy Manager\, Ignite Afterschool\nCorey Newhouse\, Founder and Principal\, Public Profit\nJocelyn Wiedow\, Network and Quality Coordinator\, Sprockets\nNikki Yamashiro\, Vice President of Research\, Afterschool Alliance (moderator)

SUMMARY:Lessons from the Pandemic: Student and Practitioner Perspectives on Mutually-Supportive Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Research validates what students and educators have long known: learning happens through relationships. In a year where relationships between students and practitioners—teachers\, AmeriCorps members serving in schools\, out-of-school providers— have been interrupted and reimagined due to COVID-19\, what can be learned from young people and adults about the ways they have mutually supported each other over the past year? What practices and policies can we draw from their experiences thus far that might be helpful for others during and after the pandemic? Join America’s Promise Alliance and City Year for a conversation with students and some of the practitioners who are supporting them as they discuss the importance and benefits of relationships as well as lessons learned from this school year on building strong relationships in challenging circumstances.

SUMMARY:Ten Big Bets: Transforming Education During the Pandemic and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, March 10\, 1:00 p.m. (ET)/ 10:00 a.m. (PT)\nPresenter: Dr. Gil Noam \nThe global pandemic has thrown our schools and OST programs into disarray. Teachers\, parents\, and children alike face uncertainty\, while distance learning strains the human connections that make school meaningful. \nIn his new book\, Ten Big Bets: Transforming Education During the Pandemic and Beyond\, Dr. Gil Noam\, a Harvard psychologist\, researcher\, and educator\, shows that times of upheaval demand fundamental positive change. Rather than providing a technical manual or rigid prescriptions\, Noam introduces ten core ideas for teachers\, administrators\, OST providers\, and families to embrace both in the harrowing time of COVID-19 and in the years of reconstruction and transformation that will follow. Paying equal attention to the needs of children and the needs of educators\, he advocates for strong academic challenge rooted in productive relationships\, engaged learning\, and positive mental health. \nJoin us March 10 when Dr. Noam will discuss these core ideas of what’s important\, offering a clear path for all adults who dedicate themselves to children and youth so that each and every one learns and thrives. He will offer concrete\, evidence-based recommendations that can be implemented immediately and over time.

SUMMARY:Game Changers: Celebrating & Learning from Black Youth Leadership
DESCRIPTION:As we reflect on our country’s history and the progress Black people have led\, we see a strong legacy of youth leadership. Many of the major accomplishments in the fight for equality have been the result of youth activism\, youth-led policy change\, and the relentless action of new generations unsatisfied with the status quo. While the energy of youth leadership is valuable in its own right\, it can have even more impact when combined with support from adults who hold power. This Black History Month\, America’s Promise Alliance invites you to join a conversation with Black youth and adult leaders to explore how we can share power and work across generations to write the next chapter of progress for the United States.

SUMMARY:Entrepreneur Education: Harness students’ talents and passions
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking to harness the summer of 2021 to help students develop their talents and passions while becoming reengaged in their education? Entrepreneur education can help students strengthen their “entrepreneurial mindsets\,” identify skills and interests\, and explore ways in which students can apply their talents to solve problems in their lives and communities. Join this session to learn about entrepreneurial education as well as free k-12 resources and events that are flexible and can be facilitated in virtual or in-person environments\, and also support other program goals such as social-emotional learning\, career readiness\, STEM\, and service learning. \nEntrepreneurship is more than starting a business\, it’s a way of thinking and acting. It’s a mindset and set of skills. Mindsets such as creativity\, opportunity seeking\, adaptability\, persistence\, and optimism help students reframe problems as opportunities and feel empowered to exert agency in their own lives. These same entrepreneurial mindsets and skills are critical to student success\, both in and out of the classroom. They are also high-demand\, employability skills in today’s workforce. Through entrepreneurship programming\, engage your local civic\, business\, and elected leaders to participate as mentors\, guest speakers\, and pitch challenge judges and watch them become champions for your youth and your programs.

SUMMARY:Data Use in Out-of-School Time\, Part I: Bridging Practice and Research through Continuous Improvement
DESCRIPTION:Out-of-school time programs sometimes struggle to define and measure what afterschool does\, and why it matters for kids and families. Too often\, programs are asked to measure outcomes that are only tangentially related to what they do\, which can be frustrating for everyone. It doesn’t have to be this way! \nThe Afterschool Alliance is excited to host this webinar in partnership with Every Hour Counts\, a national coalition of expanded-learning intermediary organizations that increases access to quality learning opportunities. Every Hour Counts has developed a Measurement Framework to help intermediary organizations use data at the youth\, program\, and system level to guide continuous improvement. In this session\, we’ll share the essentials of the framework and hear how two out-of-school time intermediaries\, Boston After School & Beyond and the Providence After School Alliance\, put the framework into practice. Presenters will share useful tips for intermediaries and out-of-school time networks on how to apply the measurement framework to their own continuous improvement process. \nThis presentation is part of a two-part series featuring contributors to Measure\, Use\, Improve! Data Use in Out-of-School Time\, from Information Age Publishing. \nPresenters:\nJessica Donner\, Every Hour Counts\nAnamarie Auger Whitaker\, RAND Corporation and University of Delaware\nAnn Durham\, Providence After School Alliance\nLisa Gomi Hui\, Boston After School & Beyond\nCorey Newhouse\, Public Profit
