SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Join the Afterschool Alliance on Wednesday\, May 19\, at 1 p.m. EDT for a virtual briefing for media and the field on new nationwide data on children’s summer experiences\, including which children have access to enriching\, engaging summer enrichment programs and which children are missing out. The report\, “Time for a Game-Changing Summer\, With Opportunity and Growth for All of America’s Youth\,” provides insights into what the summers of 2019 and 2020 looked like for children and youth in the United States. It is based on responses from nearly 30\,000 U.S. families to a household survey examining the summer of 2019\, as well as surveys of parents and providers that shed light on how the pandemic shaped young people’s summer experiences in 2020. \nThe summer months can be a time of opportunity\, when students can form friendships\, explore new subjects\, engage with mentors\, and be active and outdoors. Commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and conducted by Edge Research\, the new study reveals significant inequities in terms of summer opportunities in recent years. It can inform the design of 2021 summer experiences and how new federal funds allocated to summer and other out-of-school-time programs can help young people re-engage\, recharge\, and rebound from the pandemic. \n  \nSpeakers: \n\nJodi Grant\, Executive Director\, Afterschool Alliance\nGigi Antoni\, Director of Learning and Enrichment\, The Wallace Foundation\nJennifer McCombs\, Senior Policy Researcher\, RAND\nSergio Garcia\, Senior Manager of Learning Systems\, Big Thought\, Dallas\, Texas\nTeresa Dothard-Campbell\, Nita M. SUMMARY:Powerful Partnerships: Schools and Afterschool and Summer Programs Together for Student Recovery and Success
DESCRIPTION:Now is the moment! With a new vision for public schools and new funding\, it’s time to form new partnerships. \nAcross the country\, schools have been teaming up with community-based afterschool and summer program providers to support students during the pandemic\, from providing remote learning help and enrichment to meals and well-being check-ins. These partnerships draw on decades of research that show afterschool and summer programs boost academic\, social\, and emotional learning. \nWith new support from the American Rescue Plan\, schools have an opportunity to leverage support from afterschool and summer programs to help students re-engage\, re-connect\, and recover. \nThe AASA Learning 2025 Commission has called for districts to establish communities built on love\, respect\, and joy including structures of support that include multidirectional\ncommunications with community partners\, and year-round and afterschool programming. \nJoin us to explore what’s possible\, how to quickly form effective partnerships\, and how to maximize an investment in community-based partners for student recovery. \nSpeakers: \n\nDr. Dan Domenech\, Executive Director\, AASA\nJodi Grant\, Executive Director\, Afterschool Alliance\nDr. Ann Levett\, Superintendent\, Savannah\, Georgia\nDr. Vallerie Cave\, Assoc. SUMMARY:Creating Healing-Centered Summer Programs
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, May 5\, 2:00 p.m. (ET)/ 11:00 a.m. (PT)\nPresenter: Megan Bartlett\, Founder\, We Coach \nThe events of the last year- the immediate and long-term impact of a global pandemic as well as the renewed reckoning around our country’s dark history of racial injustice- only add to the host of overwhelmingly stressful circumstances many young people regularly face. The epidemic of trauma threatens both the physical and mental health outcomes of youth. Summer programs offer a necessary vehicle through which to address this urgent need. \nIn order to help summer programs amplify their impact\, We Coach will provide a training to help youth development professionals\, camp counselors\, and coaches understand the impact of overwhelming stress\, or trauma\, on young people and equips them with skills to take action to support these young people. Their interactive training provides a foundation in trauma-informed practice and provides concrete strategies that adults can use immediately. The training explores three core ways that programs can maximize their healing potential: through the power of relationships\, by encouraging physical activity\, and creating manageable\, resilience-building patterns of stress.

SUMMARY:American Rescue Plan: How to Access Funds for Afterschool & Summer
DESCRIPTION:Education funding provided by the American Rescue Plan presents a tremendous opportunity to offer young people the quality afterschool and summer programs that are so desperately needed. But\, with this tremendous opportunity also comes responsibility. Each of us in the afterschool field has a role to play to help ensure that funding is thoughtfully used to expand the availability of high-quality afterschool and summer programs\, address barriers to participation\, and fill in gaps in equity and access. \nThis “must join” session will provide an overview of the funding opportunity and provide tools that local communities can use to help ensure that they realize the potential of the American Rescue Plan funding to bring more afterschool and summer opportunities to life – and help all children re-engage\, re-connect\, and recover. \nLook out for continuing webinars on the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and the opportunities and implications for afterschool and summer learning programs.

SUMMARY:Re-Engaging Students During COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, the pandemic has significantly disrupted learning and family life. Challenges brought about by COVID-19—including increased mobility\, family economic hardship\, and drastic changes to learning environments—have caused more young people than usual to leave or disengage from school. As a result\, many educators and youth-supporting practitioners are thinking about attendance and engagement differently and are trying to shift and adapt their strategies based on what students need at this unique moment in time. One critical strategy right now is re-engagement: identifying young people who have left school or have not been engaged due to the pandemic and supporting them to re-enroll or re-engage in courses so that they can graduate with a high school diploma. \nJoin America’s Promise\, National League of Cities\, and Attendance Works on March 25 from 3:00-4:30 PM ET in a conversation with young people and community leaders from around the country to explore promising strategies for re-engaging students who have left school during COVID-19. \nIn this conversation\, panelists will discuss: \n\nthe scale of the issue\, including tracking\, measuring\, and understanding absenteeism and engagement data during this complex time;\nnew practices for what re-engagement has looked like in specific communities; and\nideas for prioritizing re-engagement in this and the next school year.\n\nPanelists include staff and youth representatives from: \n\nAttendance Works\nCity of Orlando – Parramore Kidz Zone and partner schools in Orlando\, FL\nColorado Youth for a Change and partner schools in Denver\, CO\nNational League of Cities – Institute for Youth\, Education\, and Families\n\n

SUMMARY:Data Use in Out-of-School Time\, Part III: Free and Low-Cost Resources for Evaluation and Continuous Quality Improvement in Afterschool
DESCRIPTION:Professionals and practitioners in afterschool and summer programs see evidence that their work benefits young people every day\, but may struggle to quantify and effectively tell the stories\, especially when working with a limited budget. \nFortunately\, there are many terrific free and low-cost resources that afterschool and summer programs can use to refine their vision for evaluation\, collect relevant\, meaningful information\, and put that information into action. In this session\, panelists will share their go-to resources for evaluation and continuous program improvement in afterschool and summer and offer insight about how to make the most of what’s available. \nThis session is intended as an intermediate-level overview of available resources for evaluation and learning. Program leaders and supervisors\, and those with a formal role for data collection and reporting\, are most likely to benefit from attending. \n  \nPresenters \n\nRegino Chavez\, Director of Evaluation\, LA’s BEST\nChristy Gallese\, Director\, Expanded Learning Opportunities\nJennifer Griffin-Wiesner\, Strategy Manager\, Ignite Afterschool\nCorey Newhouse\, Founder and Principal\, Public Profit\nJocelyn Wiedow\, Network and Quality Coordinator\, Sprockets\nNikki Yamashiro\, Vice President of Research\, Afterschool Alliance (moderator)
