SUMMARY:Youth-Centered Civics Initiatives to Strengthen Communities
DESCRIPTION:Last summer\, the Institute for Citizens & Scholars (C&S) launched the Civic Spring Project to provide six youth-centered organizations across the United States with grants to launch projects addressing pandemic-related challenges facing their communities and to promote local civic engagement during the 2020 general election. \nC&S is eager to both share findings and seek input as we develop a case study and work to elevate the role of youth engagement in driving civic learning. \nThat is why C&S is partnering with Afterschool Alliance for an interactive webinar on “Youth-Centered Civics Initiatives to Strengthen Communities.” The event will feature CSP grantee the Kentucky Student Voice Team. In this panel event\, we’ll further explore the variety of contexts in which civic learning can occur and—through the lens of CIRCLE’s evaluators and CSP grantees—dig deeper on what it means to become a youth-led organization. Discussions will feature the unique experiences of: \n\nThe KYStuVoice team\nCIRCLE’s evaluation team\nCSP facilitators\n\nAfter the panel\, we’ll open the floor to hear from the audience how this field can create and sustain equitable spaces that fortify youth power to achieve lasting reach\, depth and sustainability in communities across the country.

SUMMARY:Building Connections: Social and Emotional Learning and Young People’s Futures
DESCRIPTION:The Building Connections webinar series explores how social and emotional learning (SEL) connects to topics that are top of mind for our community so we can strengthen the many systems that support our young people. \nStudents graduating this year will enter a new world\, reshaped by the global pandemic\, the fight for racial justice\, and virtual connectivity. How are young people leveraging SEL to navigate and prepare for what’s ahead? What would they strengthen or change to ensure our education system fully supports all students in their social\, emotional and academic learning? \nJoin us to hear from Keeth Matheny and his three former high school students who are preparing to graduate from college this year. Originally featured in a 2017 Atlantic article about SEL at Austin High School\, they’ll each reflect back on how their high school SEL experiences have impacted their academics\, mental health\, and career aspirations. Attendees will hear about SEL lessons the students are carrying with them into the post-COVID world\, and strategies that educators can use to shape SEL learning opportunities that connect with young people’s lives and futures. \nRead the 2017 article: https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/03/the-social-emotional-learning-effect/521220/ \nSupport is provided by the Susan Crown Exchange.

SUMMARY:School-Age Child Care Opportunities for Afterschool and Summer
DESCRIPTION:For many\, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed both the critical importance of child care and the glaring inequities in the child care system related to access\, supply\, affordability\, and quality. Perhaps more than ever\, there is an opportunity to support working parents’ care needs across the age continuum. \nThe American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) passed in March of 2021 provided close to $40 billion for child care programs\, creating the opportunity to expand opportunities for access to high-quality care and more adequately meet program operational needs\, among others. \nIn this webinar\, we discuss the importance of directing some of these essential new child care funds to school-age care\, including afterschool and summer programs\, and outline information for providers on how the funds might support their work and ability to serve youth and families equitably. \nSpeakers \n\nAlycia Hardy\, Policy Analyst\, Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP)\nTiffany Ferrette\, Policy Analyst\, Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP)\nElena Rocha\, Senior Director\, Youth Development Partnerships and Policy\, YMCA of the USA\nGloria Hampton\, Director of School-Age Services\, Unleashing Potential\nJillian Luchner\, Policy Manager\, Afterschool Alliance

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Join the Afterschool Alliance on Wednesday\, May 19\, at 1 p.m. EDT for a virtual briefing for media and the field on new nationwide data on children’s summer experiences\, including which children have access to enriching\, engaging summer enrichment programs and which children are missing out. The report\, “Time for a Game-Changing Summer\, With Opportunity and Growth for All of America’s Youth\,” provides insights into what the summers of 2019 and 2020 looked like for children and youth in the United States. It is based on responses from nearly 30\,000 U.S. families to a household survey examining the summer of 2019\, as well as surveys of parents and providers that shed light on how the pandemic shaped young people’s summer experiences in 2020. \nThe summer months can be a time of opportunity\, when students can form friendships\, explore new subjects\, engage with mentors\, and be active and outdoors. Commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and conducted by Edge Research\, the new study reveals significant inequities in terms of summer opportunities in recent years. It can inform the design of 2021 summer experiences and how new federal funds allocated to summer and other out-of-school-time programs can help young people re-engage\, recharge\, and rebound from the pandemic. \n  \nSpeakers: \n\nJodi Grant\, Executive Director\, Afterschool Alliance\nGigi Antoni\, Director of Learning and Enrichment\, The Wallace Foundation\nJennifer McCombs\, Senior Policy Researcher\, RAND\nSergio Garcia\, Senior Manager of Learning Systems\, Big Thought\, Dallas\, Texas\nTeresa Dothard-Campbell\, Nita M. SUMMARY:Powerful Partnerships: Schools and Afterschool and Summer Programs Together for Student Recovery and Success
DESCRIPTION:Now is the moment! With a new vision for public schools and new funding\, it’s time to form new partnerships. \nAcross the country\, schools have been teaming up with community-based afterschool and summer program providers to support students during the pandemic\, from providing remote learning help and enrichment to meals and well-being check-ins. These partnerships draw on decades of research that show afterschool and summer programs boost academic\, social\, and emotional learning. \nWith new support from the American Rescue Plan\, schools have an opportunity to leverage support from afterschool and summer programs to help students re-engage\, re-connect\, and recover. \nThe AASA Learning 2025 Commission has called for districts to establish communities built on love\, respect\, and joy including structures of support that include multidirectional\ncommunications with community partners\, and year-round and afterschool programming. \nJoin us to explore what’s possible\, how to quickly form effective partnerships\, and how to maximize an investment in community-based partners for student recovery. \nSpeakers: \n\nDr. Dan Domenech\, Executive Director\, AASA\nJodi Grant\, Executive Director\, Afterschool Alliance\nDr. Ann Levett\, Superintendent\, Savannah\, Georgia\nDr. Vallerie Cave\, Assoc. SUMMARY:Creating Healing-Centered Summer Programs
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, May 5\, 2:00 p.m. (ET)/ 11:00 a.m. (PT)\nPresenter: Megan Bartlett\, Founder\, We Coach \nThe events of the last year- the immediate and long-term impact of a global pandemic as well as the renewed reckoning around our country’s dark history of racial injustice- only add to the host of overwhelmingly stressful circumstances many young people regularly face. The epidemic of trauma threatens both the physical and mental health outcomes of youth. Summer programs offer a necessary vehicle through which to address this urgent need. \nIn order to help summer programs amplify their impact\, We Coach will provide a training to help youth development professionals\, camp counselors\, and coaches understand the impact of overwhelming stress\, or trauma\, on young people and equips them with skills to take action to support these young people. Their interactive training provides a foundation in trauma-informed practice and provides concrete strategies that adults can use immediately. The training explores three core ways that programs can maximize their healing potential: through the power of relationships\, by encouraging physical activity\, and creating manageable\, resilience-building patterns of stress.

SUMMARY:American Rescue Plan: How to Access Funds for Afterschool & Summer
DESCRIPTION:Education funding provided by the American Rescue Plan presents a tremendous opportunity to offer young people the quality afterschool and summer programs that are so desperately needed. But\, with this tremendous opportunity also comes responsibility. Each of us in the afterschool field has a role to play to help ensure that funding is thoughtfully used to expand the availability of high-quality afterschool and summer programs\, address barriers to participation\, and fill in gaps in equity and access. \nThis “must join” session will provide an overview of the funding opportunity and provide tools that local communities can use to help ensure that they realize the potential of the American Rescue Plan funding to bring more afterschool and summer opportunities to life – and help all children re-engage\, re-connect\, and recover. \nLook out for continuing webinars on the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and the opportunities and implications for afterschool and summer learning programs.
