SUMMARY:Exploration of Careers that use an Engineering Mindset: The Possible Futures Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 of two 75-minute sessions with Jobs for the Future (JFF)\, where you’ll learn how to use JFF’s free Possible Futures (PF) Engineering and Design curriculum unit to introduce students to careers that require an engineering mindset. How? The interactive lessons for grades 6-10 have students assume the role of professionals in the engineering field as they learn to prototype\, iterate\, and innovate. Thinking as young professionals\, students are introduced to the design process\, develop problem-solving and research skills\, and learn to foster an engineering and growth mindset. JFF\, a national nonprofit aimed at promoting economic advancement for all\, designed the PF curriculum with a focus on STEM to help rethink how youth start to explore college and career options and to prepare them to make meaningful decisions about their future. \nPart 2 will occur on November 3\, 2021.

SUMMARY:Supporting Out-of-School Time Through the American Rescue Plan Act
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the crucial role that child care plays in supporting children\, families\, businesses\, and the economy as a whole\, the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act includes funding through the Office of Child Care (OCC) for states\, territories\, and Tribes to stabilize the child care market. Through the U.S. Department of Education (ED)\, the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund provides funds to states and school districts to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools and to address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the Nation’s students. Supporting out-of-school time (OST) programming is a priority for both funding streams. \nDuring this webinar\, hosted by the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE)\, along with speakers from OCC\, ED\, and the Afterschool Alliance\, you will be able to do the following: \n\nLearn how ARP Act funds from ED and OCC can support OST providers.\nGain an understanding from the Afterschool Alliance on the ways these funds are affecting the OST field and the role that OST intermediaries\, such as state afterschool networks\, play in supporting providers.\nExplore resources designed to support Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) lead agencies\, OST program providers\, and technical assistance (TA) providers with the ARP Act funding opportunities.

SUMMARY:Tapping into ARP State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to Support Afterschool and Summer Learning
DESCRIPTION:In addition to education and child care funds\, the American Rescue Plan that became law in March 2021 provides $350 billion for eligible state\, local\, territorial\, and Tribal governments to respond to the COVID-19 emergency and bring back jobs. SUMMARY:Youth-Centered Civics Initiatives to Strengthen Communities
DESCRIPTION:Last summer\, the Institute for Citizens & Scholars (C&S) launched the Civic Spring Project to provide six youth-centered organizations across the United States with grants to launch projects addressing pandemic-related challenges facing their communities and to promote local civic engagement during the 2020 general election. \nC&S is eager to both share findings and seek input as we develop a case study and work to elevate the role of youth engagement in driving civic learning. \nThat is why C&S is partnering with Afterschool Alliance for an interactive webinar on “Youth-Centered Civics Initiatives to Strengthen Communities.” The event will feature CSP grantee the Kentucky Student Voice Team. In this panel event\, we’ll further explore the variety of contexts in which civic learning can occur and—through the lens of CIRCLE’s evaluators and CSP grantees—dig deeper on what it means to become a youth-led organization. Discussions will feature the unique experiences of: \n\nThe KYStuVoice team\nCIRCLE’s evaluation team\nCSP facilitators\n\nAfter the panel\, we’ll open the floor to hear from the audience how this field can create and sustain equitable spaces that fortify youth power to achieve lasting reach\, depth and sustainability in communities across the country.

SUMMARY:Building Connections: Social and Emotional Learning and Young People’s Futures
DESCRIPTION:The Building Connections webinar series explores how social and emotional learning (SEL) connects to topics that are top of mind for our community so we can strengthen the many systems that support our young people. \nStudents graduating this year will enter a new world\, reshaped by the global pandemic\, the fight for racial justice\, and virtual connectivity. How are young people leveraging SEL to navigate and prepare for what’s ahead? What would they strengthen or change to ensure our education system fully supports all students in their social\, emotional and academic learning? \nJoin us to hear from Keeth Matheny and his three former high school students who are preparing to graduate from college this year. Originally featured in a 2017 Atlantic article about SEL at Austin High School\, they’ll each reflect back on how their high school SEL experiences have impacted their academics\, mental health\, and career aspirations. Attendees will hear about SEL lessons the students are carrying with them into the post-COVID world\, and strategies that educators can use to shape SEL learning opportunities that connect with young people’s lives and futures. \nRead the 2017 article: https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/03/the-social-emotional-learning-effect/521220/ \nSupport is provided by the Susan Crown Exchange.
