SUMMARY:Insights and Reflections on Planning and Implementing District-led Summer Programs
DESCRIPTION:Research tells us that school district-led summer learning programs can play a vital role in supporting students academically and providing them with enriching activities they may not otherwise experience. \nBut how do they do it? \nA forthcoming report draws from research conducted by Education Development Center\, Inc. (EDC) and commissioned by The Wallace Foundation. Supporting Quality in Summer Learning: How Districts Plan\, Develop\, and Implement Programs sheds light on the complex array of policies\, procedures\, and resources that go into the design and operation of these programs. The report explores topics such as program focus and goals\, community partnerships\, professional development\, family engagement\, and funding streams. \nDuring this webinar\, researchers will share selected findings from the study\, which draws on the perspectives of 92 professionals and policymakers—including representatives of districts\, community partners and state agencies involved in summer learning\, such as 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The study examined district strategies before\, during\, and emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic and offers perspective on how summer learning is evolving to meet shifting needs. \nRepresentatives from two communities involved in the study will then reflect on how these findings connect with how they are approaching summer programming.

SUMMARY:High-Dosage Tutoring: State Strategies for Advancing Equitable Learning Recovery
DESCRIPTION:High-dosage tutoring has emerged as both an effective intervention and a smart investment to support equitable learning recovery. Tutoring supplements quality instruction especially for children who have experienced significant learning loss as a result of the pandemic. Unfortunately\, the children most in need of this intervention — and those most likely to benefit — are often unlikely to have access to high-quality and high-dosage tutoring. Tutoring has the potential to make significant academic gains for children who have experienced significant lost learning time. States and school districts can play an essential role in ensuring equitable access to the evidence-based tutoring that can accelerate learning and address learning loss. A recent report by Casey Sullivan Taylor\, ExcelinEd’s Policy Director for Early Literacy\, explores tutoring initiatives in a number of states that are leveraging evidenced-based models for high-dosage tutoring.

SUMMARY:Making Summer a Successful and Sustainable Strategy for Student Growth
DESCRIPTION:Summer learning and enrichment is an evidence-based approach to academic growth and social-emotional development and a critical post-pandemic educational strategy. Yet launching or expanding summer programming requires districts to possess certain resources\, knowledge\, and skills that may be new to them or not fully developed. This 90-minute session will feature a robust conversation with national summer researchers and local practitioners around what it looks like to design\, execute\, and sustain summer learning and enrichment programming over time. Panelists will lift up lessons that are evidence-based and will discuss how they may be tailored to local contexts. Throughout the session\, we will solicit examples of local approaches from participants to build our collective knowledge and stimulate ideas.

SUMMARY:Summer: The Great Equalizer
DESCRIPTION:High-quality summer programs can be the great equalizer\, as these programs support academic\, social\, and emotional learning and development for school-age children in safe and supportive environments. Research has shown that children from lower income households are more likely to experience summer learning loss than their more affluent peers. These inequities have been exacerbated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act are providing a historic opportunity for system-level planning to increase equitable access to quality summer programming. \nDuring this webinar\, hosted by the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE)\, you will be able to do the following: \n\nLearn about and share examples of state and local initiatives that support equitable access to summer learning and enrichment opportunities.\nExplore a new planning guide designed to support Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) lead agencies as they work collaboratively with other agencies and organizations to plan for and implement quality summer programming.\nHighlight the importance of consumer education websites in helping families find summer programs that meet their needs.

SUMMARY:Putting Data to Work for Young People: Bridging Practice and Research through Continuous Improvement
DESCRIPTION:Do you struggle with data collection? Is it difficult for you to know what to measure and how to use data in real time to drive system change\, quality improvement and positive outcomes for youth? \nIn this webinar\, we’ll discuss why data collection is essential\, how we can use data to advance equity goals\, and effective practices for both. We will also preview the newly released Every Hour Counts Measurement Framework and accompanying Guidebook\, resources to help communities set a shared vision and process for using data for improvement—with a focus on advancing equitable systems—at the youth\, program\, and system levels. \nJennifer McCombs from Learning Policy Institute and the RAND Corporation and Anamarie Whitaker with the University of Delaware\, who led the design of the Every Hour Counts Measurement Framework and Guidebook\, will share useful tips on how intermediaries and out-of-school time networks can apply the measurement framework to their own continuous improvement processes. We will hear how one intermediary\, Boston After School & Beyond\, put the framework into practice. Femi Vance\, of the American Institutes for Research\, will share insights based on her observations of how organizations are staging their use of the Framework. \nThis webinar is presented in collaboration with the Afterschool Alliance\, National AfterSchool Association\, Forum for Youth Investment\, and National Summer Learning Association and is made possible with support from The Wallace Foundation. \nPresenters: \n\nJessica Donner\, Executive Director\, Every Hour Counts\nLisa Gomi Hui\, Director of Measurement and Improvement\, Boston After School & Beyond\nDr. Jennifer McCombs\, Director of Research\, Learning Policy Institute\nDr. Femi Vance\, Researcher\, American Institutes for Research\nDr. Anamarie Auger Whitaker\, Assistant Professor\, University of Delaware

SUMMARY:From Youth Served to Youth Led: How to build an intergenerational team for impact
DESCRIPTION:On December 1\, 2021\, at 4:30 p.m. The Institute for Citizens & Scholars (C&S) and Afterschool Alliance will host an online webinar moderated and led by students from the Kentucky Student Voice Team (KSVT). The students will share more about the report co-authored by C&S and KSVT\, to be published Nov. 8 (click HERE for more information). The report – part inspiring origin story\, part toolkit\, and part lessons learned – is intended to serve as a resource for those who seek to build meaningful youth-led and intergenerational initiatives in their organization and/or their community. This webinar will be a chance to ask questions of the KSVT citizen-experts\, learn tips and strategies to bring back to your team\, or just listen to young people talk about the incredible work they do in their schools and communities. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner\, a student seeking to engage in education policy or civic spaces\, or someone altogether new to the concept of intergenerational co-design and co-leadership\, this webinar is for you! \nThe Institute for Citizens & Scholars (C&S) recognizes the extraordinary power in the potential for young people and adults to work together to solve persistent issues in their communities. Intergenerational co-design and co-leadership maximizes impact by including more voices\, particularly the voices of youth which are often most impacted and yet rarely included in decision- and policy-making. And\, through this work\, young people cultivate their civic knowledge\, skills\, and dispositions\, and interact with people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs. \nThese resources: \n\nHelp youth and adults working in community-based programs to build capacity and support towards creating projects OF youth\, BY youth\, FOR youth\nBegin to develop common standards of practice and measurement tools for civic learning\nTo learn more about the KSVT Case Study\, click HERE. SUMMARY:Navigating SEL from the Inside Out: Implications for Out of School Time Programs
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic\, educators around the country are seeing an increasing need to support young people who may be struggling with anxiety\, depression\, fear\, trauma\, food\, insecurity\, or even homelessness. One crucial avenue through which afterschool and summer learning program staff can help support young people is through the development of social and emotional skills\, behaviors and beliefs. \nFortunately\, this past summer saw the release of an updated version of the Navigating Social and Emotional Learning from the Inside Out report from the EASEL Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Funded by the Wallace Foundation\, this updated report continues to support the idea that afterschool programs can have significant benefits to children through the development of skills and behaviors like empathy\, respect\, conflict resolution\, and managing emotions. \nIn this webinar\, which we are co-hosting with the Forum for Youth Investment and Every Hour Counts\, we will be diving deep into what the research says around SEL in OST programs with Stephanie Jones\, Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and co-author of report that discuss the value of SEL in afterschool and identify straightforward\, cost-effective strategies for improving SEL in any program. The webinar will also feature a presentation by Cheryl Hollis\, Chief Program Officer of WINGS for Kids\, who will provide insights for how to implement the lessons from the report in programs. Join us for a great discussion of how and why afterschool programs around the country are leveraging SEL to help kids recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. \nSpeakers: \n\nStephanie Jones\, Gerald S. Lesser Professor\, Harvard Graduate School of Education\nCheryl Hollis\, Chief Program Officer\, WINGS for Kids\n\nIntroductory Remarks by: \n\nJodi Grant\, Executive Director\, Afterschool Alliance\nJessica Donner\, Executive Director\, Every Hour Counts
