SUMMARY:Insights and Reflections on Planning and Implementing District-led Summer Programs
DESCRIPTION:Research tells us that school district-led summer learning programs can play a vital role in supporting students academically and providing them with enriching activities they may not otherwise experience. \nBut how do they do it? \nA forthcoming report draws from research conducted by Education Development Center\, Inc. (EDC) and commissioned by The Wallace Foundation. Supporting Quality in Summer Learning: How Districts Plan\, Develop\, and Implement Programs sheds light on the complex array of policies\, procedures\, and resources that go into the design and operation of these programs. The report explores topics such as program focus and goals\, community partnerships\, professional development\, family engagement\, and funding streams. \nDuring this webinar\, researchers will share selected findings from the study\, which draws on the perspectives of 92 professionals and policymakers—including representatives of districts\, community partners and state agencies involved in summer learning\, such as 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The study examined district strategies before\, during\, and emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic and offers perspective on how summer learning is evolving to meet shifting needs. \nRepresentatives from two communities involved in the study will then reflect on how these findings connect with how they are approaching summer programming.

SUMMARY:Making Summer a Successful and Sustainable Strategy for Student Growth
DESCRIPTION:Summer learning and enrichment is an evidence-based approach to academic growth and social-emotional development and a critical post-pandemic educational strategy. Yet launching or expanding summer programming requires districts to possess certain resources\, knowledge\, and skills that may be new to them or not fully developed. This 90-minute session will feature a robust conversation with national summer researchers and local practitioners around what it looks like to design\, execute\, and sustain summer learning and enrichment programming over time. Panelists will lift up lessons that are evidence-based and will discuss how they may be tailored to local contexts. Throughout the session\, we will solicit examples of local approaches from participants to build our collective knowledge and stimulate ideas.

SUMMARY:Summer: The Great Equalizer
DESCRIPTION:High-quality summer programs can be the great equalizer\, as these programs support academic\, social\, and emotional learning and development for school-age children in safe and supportive environments. Research has shown that children from lower income households are more likely to experience summer learning loss than their more affluent peers. These inequities have been exacerbated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act are providing a historic opportunity for system-level planning to increase equitable access to quality summer programming. \nDuring this webinar\, hosted by the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE)\, you will be able to do the following: \n\nLearn about and share examples of state and local initiatives that support equitable access to summer learning and enrichment opportunities.\nExplore a new planning guide designed to support Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) lead agencies as they work collaboratively with other agencies and organizations to plan for and implement quality summer programming.\nHighlight the importance of consumer education websites in helping families find summer programs that meet their needs.

SUMMARY:Planning for a Game-Changing Summer
DESCRIPTION:With new resources available for summer programming\, and great challenges facing our students\, we have an opportunity to make summer 2022 a game-changer for students. Programs allow students to explore\, create\, connect with peers and mentors\, and accelerate learning in an informal and fun setting. While this summer provides a tremendous opportunity to help youth thrive\, this winter is the ideal time to plan your 2022 summer programs. The Afterschool Alliance\, Every Hour Counts\, and the National Summer Learning Association have teamed up to offer a webinar reviewing what it takes to make a summer program successful\, recommendations for planning effectively right now\, and tips from program leaders. \nNikki Yamashiro\, VP of Research\, will open by sharing context on the summer landscape. Dr. Jennifer McCombs\, Director of Research at the Learning Policy Institute and one of the authors of the 2018 Wallace Foundation report “Getting to Work on Summer Learning: Recommended Practices for Success\,” will share what research tells us about planning and implementing an effective summer learning program. Summer program leaders will talk about the nuts and bolts of what it takes to put these practices to work on the ground to make a program truly effective and impactful for young people. \nSpeakers:\nJennifer McCombs\, Director of Research\, Learning Policy Institute\nNikki Yamashiro\, Vice President of Research\, Afterschool Alliance\nBrodrick Clarke\, Vice President\, Programs\, National Summer Learning Association

SUMMARY:Tapping into ARP State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to Support Afterschool and Summer Learning
DESCRIPTION:In addition to education and child care funds\, the American Rescue Plan that became law in March 2021 provides $350 billion for eligible state\, local\, territorial\, and Tribal governments to respond to the COVID-19 emergency and bring back jobs. Under the jurisdiction of the US Department of the Treasury\, the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds provide a substantial infusion of resources to help turn the tide on the pandemic\, address its economic fallout and lay the foundation for a strong and equitable recovery. \nRecent guidance on these Recovery Funds makes clear that allowable uses include addressing educational disparities such as “evidence-based educational services and practices to address the academic needs of students\, including tutoring\, summer\, afterschool\, and other extended learning and enrichment programs; and evidence-based practices to address the social\, emotional\, and mental health needs of students…” This webinar will walk through the funding opportunities at the state and local level as well as provide examples of how the funds are being used to support enrichment and learning opportunities for young people. \nFacilitator \n\nErik Peterson\, Afterschool Alliance\n\nPresenters \n\nGislene Tasayco. SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Join the Afterschool Alliance on Wednesday\, May 19\, at 1 p.m. EDT for a virtual briefing for media and the field on new nationwide data on children’s summer experiences\, including which children have access to enriching\, engaging summer enrichment programs and which children are missing out. The report\, “Time for a Game-Changing Summer\, With Opportunity and Growth for All of America’s Youth\,” provides insights into what the summers of 2019 and 2020 looked like for children and youth in the United States. It is based on responses from nearly 30\,000 U.S. families to a household survey examining the summer of 2019\, as well as surveys of parents and providers that shed light on how the pandemic shaped young people’s summer experiences in 2020. \nThe summer months can be a time of opportunity\, when students can form friendships\, explore new subjects\, engage with mentors\, and be active and outdoors. Commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and conducted by Edge Research\, the new study reveals significant inequities in terms of summer opportunities in recent years. It can inform the design of 2021 summer experiences and how new federal funds allocated to summer and other out-of-school-time programs can help young people re-engage\, recharge\, and rebound from the pandemic. \n  \nSpeakers: \n\nJodi Grant\, Executive Director\, Afterschool Alliance\nGigi Antoni\, Director of Learning and Enrichment\, The Wallace Foundation\nJennifer McCombs\, Senior Policy Researcher\, RAND\nSergio Garcia\, Senior Manager of Learning Systems\, Big Thought\, Dallas\, Texas\nTeresa Dothard-Campbell\, Nita M. SUMMARY:Powerful Partnerships: Schools and Afterschool and Summer Programs Together for Student Recovery and Success
DESCRIPTION:Now is the moment! With a new vision for public schools and new funding\, it’s time to form new partnerships. \nAcross the country\, schools have been teaming up with community-based afterschool and summer program providers to support students during the pandemic\, from providing remote learning help and enrichment to meals and well-being check-ins. These partnerships draw on decades of research that show afterschool and summer programs boost academic\, social\, and emotional learning. \nWith new support from the American Rescue Plan\, schools have an opportunity to leverage support from afterschool and summer programs to help students re-engage\, re-connect\, and recover. \nThe AASA Learning 2025 Commission has called for districts to establish communities built on love\, respect\, and joy including structures of support that include multidirectional\ncommunications with community partners\, and year-round and afterschool programming. \nJoin us to explore what’s possible\, how to quickly form effective partnerships\, and how to maximize an investment in community-based partners for student recovery. \nSpeakers: \n\nDr. Dan Domenech\, Executive Director\, AASA\nJodi Grant\, Executive Director\, Afterschool Alliance\nDr. Ann Levett\, Superintendent\, Savannah\, Georgia\nDr. Vallerie Cave\, Assoc. SUMMARY:Creating Healing-Centered Summer Programs
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, May 5\, 2:00 p.m. (ET)/ 11:00 a.m. (PT)\nPresenter: Megan Bartlett\, Founder\, We Coach \nThe events of the last year- the immediate and long-term impact of a global pandemic as well as the renewed reckoning around our country’s dark history of racial injustice- only add to the host of overwhelmingly stressful circumstances many young people regularly face. The epidemic of trauma threatens both the physical and mental health outcomes of youth. Summer programs offer a necessary vehicle through which to address this urgent need. \nIn order to help summer programs amplify their impact\, We Coach will provide a training to help youth development professionals\, camp counselors\, and coaches understand the impact of overwhelming stress\, or trauma\, on young people and equips them with skills to take action to support these young people. Their interactive training provides a foundation in trauma-informed practice and provides concrete strategies that adults can use immediately. The training explores three core ways that programs can maximize their healing potential: through the power of relationships\, by encouraging physical activity\, and creating manageable\, resilience-building patterns of stress.
