SUMMARY:Transforming Science Learning: Part 2: Science Learning and Language Integration With Multilingual Learners: Asset-Oriented Framing
DESCRIPTION:This web seminar is Part 2 of a two-part series. The purpose of these two 90-minute sessions is to present contemporary approaches to developing NGSS-designed instructional materials that integrate science and language with multilingual learners. SUMMARY:Transforming Science Learning: Leading the Implementation of High-Quality Instructional Materials to Enact Standards
DESCRIPTION:High-quality instructional materials (HQIM) designed for next generation science can make a difference in the quality of equitable science teaching and learning throughout the educational system and for all learners (i.e.\, for all leaders\, teachers\, and students). So how can local leaders take a systems approach to the selection\, broad and effective implementation\, and sustained improvements offered by such materials? What are some practical ways to make this work in our community? Participants will consider these questions as they are introduced to systems thinking and the drivers that impact the successful implementation of high-quality instructional materials. Participants will also learn more about these system drivers through the stories of large and small districts who took on the challenge of implementing high-quality instructional materials at the middle school level. Participants will consider their own context and readiness for such an initiative.

SUMMARY:Reimaging STEM Education - The Pathway to Convergence Education
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by: Patti Curtis\, Robert Noyce/Ellen Lettvin STEM Education Fellow\, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education\, U.S. Department of Education \nClimate change\, biotechnology\, infectious disease\, space\, and entrepreneurship are all topics that require educators to lean into more than one discipline. Students are more likely to enjoy learning\, retain knowledge\, and build skills when taught in a transdisciplinary fashion embedded in real-world socio-scientific challenges and opportunities relevant to their experiences. Learn more about this pedagogical style that promotes scientific and systems thinking\, student engagement\, and innovative solution-creating and how you can implement it in your educational settings. Our panelists include classroom educators practicing convergence education who will share promising practices with you to engage today’s youth. \nSpeakers: \n\nKelly Jo Day\, STEM Specialist\, Office of Science\, U.S. Department of Energy\nTrey Smith\, Chester Public School\, Philadelphia\, PA\nLaura Akesson\, Einstein Fellow\, Office of Science\, U.S. Department of Energy\nCarol O’Donnell\, Executive Director\, Smithsonian Science Education Center\, Smithsonian Institution\nJorge Valdes\, Ph.D. Education Advisor\, United States Patent and Trademark Office

SUMMARY:Innovation in Out-of-School Digital STEM Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by: The Campaign for Gravel-Level Reading\nCo-sponsored by: Overdeck Family Foundation \nAfterschool STEM isn’t just fun; it plays a unique role in promoting academic outcomes\, supporting social-emotional development\, and leveraging the home and community environments as places for extended learning for students from all walks of life. When the pandemic shut down schools and after-school programs\, it created a real sense of urgency for accessible digital platforms that can support children’s learning. This was especially important for math: between 2019 and 2021\, students’ average math scores dropped by a range of 3.3 points to 4.5 points for sixth-graders and eighth-graders\, respectively\, fueling the need for academic support outside the school day.

SUMMARY:Modeling Engineering Practices
DESCRIPTION:Engineering has become a staple of STEM programming for youth. How can we confidently bring engineering into our programming and support youth as they engage in problem solving? In this module\, participants gain first-hand experience with engineering by solving a design problem. They examine the components of the engineering design process and discuss ways to model the process with youth. Asking Purposeful Questions is a prerequisite to this skill. \nThe expectation is that you will be live at all three sessions and an active member of this coaching cohort. Stipends are offered to participants who complete feedback surveys before and after a module.
